Sandra Bullock has taken on similar roles before, portraying a police officer operating outside the main group. Here, she is "Cassie," a woman struggling with relationships who finds herself partnered with "Sam" (Ben Chaplin). She seems to tease him, both in their personal interactions and as they try to solve what appears to be an ideal crime scenario. With very few leads available, her sharp instincts guide her to a school where, despite the absence of any proof, she focuses on “Haywood” (Ryan Gosling), someone she instantly dislikes. More digging turns up "Pendleton" (Michael Pitt), who enjoys caviar—as did the deceased. Could these individuals be linked? I’ve seldom witnessed such a promising group of actors mishandled to this degree. Bullock seems unengaged, and her character is honestly quite dull; the chemistry between her and Chaplin, who appears overwhelmed, simply isn't there. There's a suggestion of something like an attraction between Gosling and the consistently mysterious Pitt, but I suspect that’s just my mind searching for any reason to get through this truly disheartening film. Ultimately, it becomes a contest of wills, and those seemingly in control act as if they were paralyzed; chance occurrences become overly significant in the resolution, and at almost two hours long, I spent more time watching seagulls outside the window than I would have preferred. It wasn't good!
