The movie presents an agreement forged in harshness, demanding that some must perish so others may survive. It’s a contemporary reimagining of the Leopold and Loeb situation, with Barbet Schroeder at the helm and Sandra Bullock portraying a detective burdened by personal struggles as she attempts to establish that two teenage students (Ryan Gosling and Michael Pitt) have carried out what they believe is an ideal crime—reportedly for amusement. While not entirely unpleasant, the film benefits from solid performances from its main cast, maintains interest through its storyline, and features lovely cinematography by Luciano Tovoli; Schroeder also infuses the production with a fitting sense of discomfort. However, writer Tony Gayton fails to provide adequate psychological complexity to the two boys, which makes their reasons for acting as they do, along with the ensuing investigation, feel superficial and like a standard thriller exercise. The two-hour runtime doesn't improve things either, because it highlights the lack of substance given to Gosling and Pitt’s characters, while also revealing how predictable and overused the story is. This becomes problematic when the narrative ought to be psychologically rich, resulting in a disappointing experience. 6/10
