Christopher Plummer takes on the iconic deerstalker in this visually appealing and skillfully crafted version of "Sherlock Holmes." Alongside the dependable “Dr. Watson” (James Mason), he becomes involved in a perplexing inquiry concerning a string of disturbing killings in Whitechapel. The events, being referred to locally as the crimes of "Jack the Ripper," have left "Lestrade" (Frank Finlay) so perplexed that his position is threatened after an intervention from the Commissioner (Sir Anthony Quayle). This adaptation delves into the developing narrative surrounding the identity and motivations behind the “Ripper,” including political maneuvering and courtly schemes. The actors generally perform well, contributing to a pervasive feeling of hopelessness and, in some measure, degradation reflecting the lives of these women—with notable contributions from Susan Clark (“Mary”) and Genevieve Bujold (“Annie”), the latter delivering a particularly affecting scene near the conclusion. The ending feels drawn out, which perhaps highlights some constraints on Plummer’s performance, but apart from that, this is a diverting reimagining of a story enhanced by meticulous detail and an impactful musical score. While it doesn't reach the heights of Rathbone and Bruce's portrayals, Plummer and Mason do a commendable job, making for a pleasant viewing experience.
