CinemaSerf on Murder at the Gallop

8/10 · Jun 1, 2024

The opening music, arranged for horses by Ron Goodwin, immediately signals what's in store for viewers. Margaret Rutherford shines as the delightfully scatterbrained elderly woman who favors unconventional thought processes and traditional investigative methods. Among the four films she created alongside Stringer Davis and Charles Tingwell—playing the somewhat slow-witted "Inspector Craddock"—this one holds a special place for me. The plot revolves around the death of a rich, isolated man (or did it!?) and the appearance of his greedy family members following his passing. As expected, a murder occurs while “Miss Marple” attempts to identify the person responsible. Dame Flora Robson and Robert Morley provide excellent supporting performances, and this brief but charming detective story is simply wonderful to experience.
