The movie portrays a young woman’s struggle with a severe form of cancer and how her family—her husband, two children, and friends—navigate the end of her life. Drawing from actual occurrences, the story follows Kate (Emilia Fox) after she receives a diagnosis, alongside her husband, Singe (Rafe Spall), as they confront their hopeful but ultimately doomed fight; the narrative shifts between recollections of their early relationship, present-day events, and reflections afterward. The storytelling is skillfully done, and the two main actors deliver powerful, heartfelt, and believable performances. There are moments where it veers toward sentimentality, but that feels genuine to the portrayals; you get a sense of the range of feelings—hope, optimism, reality, despair, frustration—that people facing such an awful situation must experience. That sentiment isn't overly saccharine, though there are some predictable scenes, particularly during their courtship; however, this just makes it seem more realistic—it’s about ordinary people! It's a difficult film to watch, but I believe it is as effective of a depiction of the trauma involved in these circumstances as any I’ve encountered, and it also manages to include touches of humor.
