Andrew McCarthy’s performance is commendable, however, the rest of the cast seems unengaged, and this extends to the film’s direction. The movie aims for a Neo Noir aesthetic, but it fails to capture the essential qualities of the genre—the roughness, the sense of intrigue—and the female characters lack the necessary danger and cunning. The investigators aren't portrayed as tough or determined, even Madison, who is typically presented that way. They also don’t actively investigate anything much. Ultimately, it appears only Andrew McCarthy puts forth a genuine effort. Otherwise, it’s simply four men driving around in a convertible, attempting to appear intimidating or annoying while the story progresses without their real participation.
