It was an unsatisfactory viewing experience; I don’t anticipate returning to it and can’t suggest others do either. I now understand why people have been so enthusiastic about this film. It seems largely due to its departure from the original, essentially abandoning what made that one special and beginning anew. The filmmakers intentionally removed the humor and fantastical creatures of the first installment in favor of a darker, more realistic tone—something akin to a DC production. Following those choices, they decided to reintroduce magic, but primarily for the antagonists, who at least seemed to have some consideration for women's rights. To be frank, I didn’t find the movie engaging enough to fully grasp what was happening. For example, I am aware that "Mushu" has been replaced by a phoenix, yet I can’t recall anything about its role in the story. Mulan's true identity is revealed relatively early on, and she narrowly avoids execution multiple times due to her achievements—all unfolding within a much less intense environment than what was portrayed in the 1998 film. Despite the considerable investment that prevents it from being outright terrible, the movie simply doesn’t feel right. While there are moments of visual splendor, it misses the comforting and endearing quality one would expect from a Disney picture.
