Disney’s latest fantasy draws inspiration from an old Chinese legend about Imperial times. With invaders threatening the kingdom, the Emperor needs every soldier possible to mount a defense. His messengers ride across the land summoning warriors, and they reach “Mulan,” who decides to disguise herself as a man rather than let her elderly father go into battle. The animation takes on a noticeably darker tone, with plenty of action sequences; the villain "Shan-Yu" has unsettling eyes, and the use of deeper colors combined with Jerry Goldsmith’s percussion-heavy score does create an atmosphere of danger in the film's later portion. “Mulan” herself proves to be a spirited heroine who holds her own against the men around her, despite spending much of the story undercover. However, my rating is only 3/5 because Eddie Murphy was distracting. "Mushu" felt excessively loud and grating; an unnecessary complication that ultimately detracted from the movie experience.
