The narrative felt reminiscent of Dickens at times, centering around two young boys who frequently travel the Mississippi River by boat. Evidence suggested a recent hurricane, as they found a vessel firmly stuck in some tree branches during one of their stops. A brief examination revealed it had been occupied recently, and just as they were preparing to depart, they encountered "Mud" (Matthew McConaughey). “Ellis” (Tye Sheridan) seemed more interested in this mysterious man than his friend “Neckbone” (Jacob Lofland’s commendable performance), and he agreed to bring him food and assist with repairing the boat – provided the boys could keep it afterward! As their connection gradually deepened, details emerged about the troubles facing both the young boy whose parents were divorcing and who was about to lose his houseboat, and the man on the run, who had a story involving love with “Juniper” (Reese Witherspoon) and instances of violence. With tensions escalating and the search for "Mud" intensifying, circumstances became dangerous, prompting the characters to confront their past actions and consider how they would affect their futures. McConaughey appears comfortable and genuine in his role; his presence carries a great deal of weight, but it's really Sheridan who captures attention as his initially naive character develops into someone more mature, perceptive, and – due to “Mae Pearl” (Bonnie Sturdivant) – somewhat troubled by adolescent feelings. The location is effectively utilized, providing a glimpse into a community with its own customs, while the measured use of conversation allows the story to unfold organically, showcasing an unusual and precarious connection between these two disparate individuals. It’s more complex than it initially seems, and merits investing a few hours in viewing.
