The film progresses at a measured pace, reminiscent of Alan Bennett’s work. It never quite ignites with excitement, but the writing is solid and portrays a believable depiction of the monotonous and repetitive lifestyle experienced by Lowry and his mother, who was mostly confined to bed. The actors have good chemistry, creating a feeling for what their connection may have truly been like during a time of relative poverty in industrial Lancashire in the 1930s, when Lowry worked as a rent collector. Once you grasp how ordinary this existence was, it begins to explain both the considerable length of time before his art gained recognition—including from his mother—and why that recognition eventually arrived.
