Numerous explanations have emerged concerning the dynamic between Queen Victoria and her Balmoral gamekeeper, John Brown, who was brought in after Prince Albert’s passing as an attempt to lift her from a period of sadness. Director John Madden chooses to focus on portraying the personalities of both the Queen and her Highland attendant, instead of attempting to produce something that would satisfy historical debate. Naturally, everything presented is based on conjecture, but Judi Dench and Billy Connolly are remarkable in developing a sincere, and ultimately affectionate bond that seems believable—particularly for a woman isolated by an almost excessively deferential staff. Geoffrey Palmer also delivers a strong performance as her Private Secretary (Sir Henry Ponsonby), who struggles to balance formality with efficiency while navigating the disapproval from family members and other employees stemming from Brown’s connection with the Queen throughout the film's unfolding events. Antony Sher is memorable as the astute Disraeli, David Westhead embodies the visibly displeased Prince of Wales, and Gerard Butler appears in an early role as John’s brother, "Archie." As anticipated, the production values and artistic choices contribute to a skillfully made movie.
