“Mr. Right” feels like a romantic comedy about a hitman that didn't quite come together. The premise is familiar—similar to something you might find in “True Romance” or “Grosse Point Blank”—but the execution falls short, coming across as disorganized and poorly planned. Martha, who’s had bad luck with relationships, finds her life changing when she meets Francis, a man who happens to be a hired killer. Their romance unfolds amidst violence, including knife fights and shootings. The script, penned by Max Landis of “American Ultra,” doesn't hold up under scrutiny; I anticipated better writing from him. Tim Roth and RZA provide entertaining supporting roles, but Kendrick and Rockwell are the film’s main draw. Seeing those two actors together on screen was a dream come true—they have fantastic chemistry. However, their talents feel squandered by this flawed movie. I sincerely hope they collaborate again in something worthwhile; they both deserve a stronger project. “Mr. Right” had potential but ultimately fails to deliver. It’s likely they could have been better utilized in another project, but as an option for a relaxed movie night at home, it's passable enough. Highlights include Sam Rockwell’s dancing and understated delivery, along with Anna Kendrick’s portrayal of a cynical yet hopeful character who contrasts well with him. Tim Roth also stands out as a mysterious mercenary, and The RZA is reliably practical in his role. On the downside, the script strains to force an intense action plot into a story that functions adequately on its own. It's clear why this film didn’t receive a wide theatrical release. I found it enjoyable enough, but I doubt I’ll recall much about it next month.
