The combination of a seasoned director and performers elevates Mr. & Mrs. Smith to its highest point within the romantic comedy subgenre centered around spies battling each other. Mr. & Mrs. Smith utilizes a plot structure reminiscent of films such as This Means War, Killers, and Knight and Day, which all involve romance intertwined with espionage. What sets it apart is that Mr. & Mrs. Smith was released earlier than those films, and it’s clearly the strongest offering among them. Following his considerable success with The Bourne Identity, Doug Liman secured two of Hollywood's most prominent stars—particularly at that point in their careers—for his subsequent spy action film. While the screenplay isn't entirely polished, Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt’s on-screen connection and inherent appeal make up for it. Sequences involving car chases, explosions, fights with bare hands, gunplay, and virtually every other trope of an action movie are present throughout, interspersed with brief moments to enjoy Vince Vaughn’s absurd dialogue. The film may be a bit over the top, but it provides an enjoyable spin on the spy genre from individuals who have already demonstrated their familiarity with it.
