Julia Ashton isn’t exactly sharp, and she learns early on when taken to the opera by the desirable Mr. Malcolm (Sope Dirisu) that he finds her opinions about the Corn Laws disappointing. Feeling rejected, things get worse when Lord Cassidy (Oliver Jackson Cohen), who is barely recognizable, tells her that the man she was courting has a set of requirements for any potential wife. Annoyed, they devise a scheme to turn his arrogance against him. To do this, they involve her somewhat innocent friend Selina (Freida Pinto), who agrees to try and win over Malcolm while creating their own list of demands to present to him at the end of this charade. Predictably, things don’t unfold as intended. It turns out that Malcolm and Selina begin to connect, Julia finds herself attracting the attention of the handsome Capt. Ossory (Theo James), and, as Shakespeare wrote, "the best laid plans...." The film is visually appealing, with lovely costumes and grand estates contributing to the overall look, but the plot feels like a combination of “Les Liaisons Dangereuses” and a simplified version of Jane Austen. The characters aren't particularly well-developed—and much of the acting reflects this—and the rather simple story has a predictable quality that leaves you feeling underwhelmed. Those who enjoy Victorian period pieces will likely find something to appreciate; it’s not a terrible film, but I think it would be better suited for television viewing at Christmas than a trip to the cinema.
