It seems only right that America got its own version of the “Huggetts” and “Monsieur Hulot,” so here comes "Mr. Hobbs" to depict a family vacation gone wrong. All James Stewart’s character, Roger, really desires is to go to the beach with his wife Peggy (Maureen O'Hara) and simply relax. She, however, views this as an ideal chance to gather their whole family—including two grandchildren! Roger isn't thrilled about the idea; he doesn’t naturally feel paternal and has two grown daughters and children ranging from 10 to 18 years old. The kids mostly seem okay with his detached parenting style. Danny (Michael Burns) just wants to watch television reruns, while Katey (Lauri Peters), fresh from getting braces, prefers not to speak. To make matters worse for Roger, the vacation rental is falling apart—held together by rust, decay, and sheer hope; the plumbing acts up as much as the weather does, and their housekeeper Brenda (Minerva Urecal) quickly leaves. After a few days of this chaos, Roger feels like he’s losing it until he hears about a dance in town, so they all head out. Katey initially has trouble finding someone to dance with, but after her dad intervenes (and spends $5), the handsome Joe (Fabian) steps in. It's hard to say if this could be something more than just money exchanging hands. You also wonder if Roger might just walk into the ocean and keep going. There are moments of enjoyment to be found, largely thanks to Stewart’s distinctive comedic timing, which complements O’Hara’s ability to elicit smiles. Fabian attempts a goatee—before goatees were even common—and there are some gentle jokes about parenting that seem more calculated than genuine. The film includes only one short song, offset by an incredibly unlikely fight that seems to erupt out of nowhere. If you needed evidence regarding the insanity of planning a family holiday, this offers it in abundance; it’s a simple—though perhaps somewhat drawn-out—look at how you frequently need a vacation after your vacation.
