I didn’t really register this film when it first appeared, but because I generally find Eddie Murphy entertaining, I decided to check it out recently. I found the movie passable, although it failed to connect with me emotionally as I believe it intended, and I can't quite pinpoint why. The filmmakers created a layered character in Mr. Church, portraying him as both caring and devoted, but also showing other sides of his personality like occasional drunkenness and aggression. There were a few additional minor details about him that felt disconnected and never fully clarified for me. I appreciated the paths taken by two of the men involved with Charlie; it seemed almost disappointing to have her child’s father be such an insignificant figure who didn't want any involvement in his life. Perhaps this was meant to mirror her mother’s actions. It struck me as a convenient plot device, and I can't help but think that giving more attention to the topic of fatherhood could have added some dramatic intensity. Despite all this, it was a sincere effort to create an uplifting film, and while it isn't something I'll rush to watch again, I wouldn’t advise anyone against seeing it.
