It’s not exactly a cinematic masterpiece, but Tom Selleck gives a strong performance as an arrogant, self-centered, frankly unpleasant character—though that’s actually part of what makes the film appealing. At its core, the story demonstrates how baseball can connect people across different countries, and I'm convinced that eventually everyone will recognize it’s superior to soccer. Until then, though, it functions as a movie about someone encountering the most extreme culture clash imaginable, embodied by the least suitable individual for the situation. The film sets up expectations of a positive resolution, suggesting Mr. Baseball will learn from his errors and baseball will ultimately triumph—and predictably, it follows through on these promises, which is also part of its appeal. Ultimately, it’s just a baseball movie, and it takes considerable effort to make one truly bad.
