The Oklahoman, directed by Francis Lyon and penned by Daniel Ullman, features Joel McCRea, Barbara Hale, Brad Dexter, Gloria Talbott, Michael Pate, Verna Felton, and Douglas Dick in its cast. Hans Salter composed the music, with cinematography by Carl Guthrie. Following the death of his wife during childbirth, Doctor John Brighton (McCrea) pauses in Cherokee Wells, Oklahoma, to lay her to rest. He then chooses to remain there and establish a medical practice, which leads him into conflict with the town’s troublemakers led by the Dobie brothers (Dexter/Dick). A CinemaScope/De Luxe Color production, The Oklahoman seems to be among McCrea's less familiar Western films. It’s unfortunate because while it may not have a lot of action, it is full of well-developed characters and delivers a worthwhile message. Doctor Brighton embodies the typical McCrea persona—a gentle man who serves as a pillar of his community and is liked by everyone except those causing trouble. As racial prejudice becomes apparent and a secret about the land emerges, Brighton finds himself compelled to defend what he believes in, even if it puts him at risk. The Native American characters are thoughtfully portrayed, demonstrating their work ethic and importance within the town. This appears to be a place where integration is successful; however, when financial opportunities arise for the Dobie Brothers, race becomes a problem. A somewhat whimsical romantic subplot involving Hale and Talbott (who plays an Indian woman) exists, but it doesn’t detract from the film because it isn't emphasized. Dexter provides a compelling performance as a suspicious antagonist, thankfully avoiding exaggerated portrayals. While the picture lacks significant depth in its thematic exploration—it is, after all, a more modest Western—some elements of quality are noticeable as the characters move through the familiar scenery of the Iverson Ranch. McCrea’s presence remains consistently comforting throughout. The film earns a rating of 7/10
