The film centers on "Bartek" (Jan Hrynkiewicz), a young man facing hardship while living with his somewhat controlling mother, Ewa Skibinska, on their financially unstable farm. His routine existence changes with the return of "Dawid" (Pawel Tomaszewski), who has come home following the death of his father, and whom Bartek meets at the train station—marking their initial encounter. As the story unfolds, a growing fondness develops between them. Each seems to provide the other with a glimmer of hope, suggesting an opportunity to move beyond the monotonous reality of rural Poland, which is shown to be marked by religious prejudice and intolerance. The villagers' reactions quickly reveal that the boys’ relationship is more than just friendship. Director Kamil Krawczycki has created a tender love story without resorting to clichés. Skibinska’s character provides a significant contrast to Bartek’s often complicated experiences, effectively portraying the importance of family devotion—even if it doesn’t align with her own desires. While the plot might feel somewhat familiar, it's a skillfully made drama featuring three compelling performances, complemented by Viktoria Filus as "Daria." The ending left me feeling profoundly realistic. It acts as a stark reminder to those of us in Western Europe, during 2023, that acceptance of same-sex relationships isn’t globally established across the continent and is valuable enough to warrant ninety minutes of attention simply to appreciate what we often overlook.
