Brent Marchant on The (Ex)perience of Love

8/10 · Mar 4, 2024

What distinguishes affection from physical intimacy? It's a question many people grapple with, and one that some might prefer to avoid altogether. But what happens when that question arises in the context of dealing with a delicate, persistent issue? That’s the situation Sandra (Lucie Debay) and her boyfriend Rémy (Lazare Gousseau) find themselves in as they try to resolve their long-standing infertility struggles. They desire to have a child but are encountering significant difficulties conceiving. Following numerous attempts at various solutions, Sandra's doctor (Vincent Lecuyer) suggests an unconventional approach. Having recently attended a medical conference, he believes the couple is experiencing “Past Love Syndrome,” a psychological condition that’s preventing fertilization and which can usually be resolved if each partner sleeps with all of their former sexual partners. Sandra and Rémy are initially taken aback but willing to consider it, although there's one significant hurdle – they have vastly different experiences regarding past relationships. Rémy has been intimate with only three other women, while Sandra’s history is, let’s just say, considerably more extensive. This creates a noticeable difference between them, yet, driven by their desire for parenthood, they are willing to explore the possibilities, an undertaking that leads to numerous unforeseen events, some of which are humorous, others touching, and still others quite sad. Thus, the journey toward becoming parents begins on an unusual path, filled with moments of laughter and several thought-provoking observations about love, sex, relationships, and faithfulness (or alternatives to it). Writer-directors Raphaël Balboni and Ann Sirot have crafted a wonderfully charming, humorous, and heartwarming story, one that moves along well and is presented with creative camerawork and an occasionally whimsical, often vibrant production design. This is the kind of quirky romantic film that encourages viewers to consider different perspectives on love and how we approach it, demonstrating that there are many unexplored options available to us. The movie effectively illustrates that experiencing love doesn't have to be a standard formula. This Belgian film certainly deserves distribution here. Hopefully, it will get it.
