Several films emerged during wartime aiming to highlight the terrible actions committed by the Nazis against Norway’s previously tranquil population. This film follows "Eric" (played by Paul Muni) as he escapes to Britain, undergoes training, and then returns to his country with a desire for retribution against those who have taken over and their collaborators, while also assisting the British in bombing a high-altitude airbase that could threaten allied lands and vessels. The narrative does tend to wander somewhat. It’s difficult to believe Muni is Norwegian, nor is Alexander Knox particularly frightening as a German officer or Rod Cameron believable as a pastor. In fact, with the exception of Sir Cedric Hardwicke portraying the standard British admiral, the actors don't quite fit their roles—and this problem is worsened by some overly elaborate conversations, which contributes to a slightly melodramatic feel. The ending does provide a degree of excitement, and considering its primary goal was propaganda, it fulfills its intended function. It’s something you could watch, but not likely to remember for long.
