Wuchak on The Devonsville Terror

6/10 · Jun 16, 2020

In Devonsville, Massachusetts, the year 1683 saw three women put to death for witchcraft. Three centuries pass, and Dr. Warley, portrayed by Donald Pleasence, begins looking into a supposed curse affecting this isolated community when three unknown women arrive – a schoolteacher (Suzanna Love), a DJ (Deanna Haas), and an environmentalist (Mary Walden). The question arises: could these be the reincarnated spirits of those earlier victims? Paul Willson, Robert Walker Jr., and Michael Accardo take on roles as local men. “The Devonsville Terror,” released in 1983, is a low-budget independent mystery/horror film. It incorporates flashback sequences that recall “The Blood on Satan's Claw” (1971), alongside contemporary scenes sharing a similar atmosphere to "Let’s Scare Jessica to Death” (1971), “The Shuttered Room” (1967) and “The Fog” (1980). Some might consider it an early example of what would later be seen in “The Lords of Salem” (2012). Although the film’s limited budget is apparent, director/writer Ulli Lommel attempts to compensate with a distinctive artistic approach, largely succeeding. A palpable sense of unsettling rural atmosphere permeates the story. The narrative might have benefited from including a few characters who stood in opposition to the zealous religious figures, but it's not unusual to encounter legalistic individuals driven by malice and falsehoods. The movie has a running time of 1 hour and 22 minutes and was filmed on location in Gleason and Lincoln County, Wisconsin. GRADE: B-/C+
