I have to admit, I felt let down by this narrative. It's obvious that Cynthia Erivo invested herself completely in it, however, there are simply too many unanswered questions for my liking. We’re introduced to her character, “Jacqueline,” as she walks around a small Greek island town and takes sugar packets. Soon after, we see that she has almost nothing but the clothes on her back, sleeps under a blanket in a hidden cave, and travels by hitching rides on buses. Through flashbacks, we learn about her wealthy upbringing in Liberia and a romance with a British woman (Honor Swinton Byrne) in London, and it’s apparent that neither of these happy times are meant to last. The earlier part of her life, specifically, unfolds in a fairly straightforward and predictable way. Luckily, she meets tour guide “Callie” (Alia Shawkat), who is growing tired of the constant routine with elderly tourists who just want to say they’ve visited the area. They slowly begin to connect, and perhaps there's some hope for "Jacqueline"? Both actresses perform adequately, but there are too many pieces missing or not fleshed out enough. For example, how did she end up here? A lot of her past suffering has to be inferred, and while I didn’t need explicit depictions, I would have liked a bit more insight into what motivated "Jacqueline." The film's production is fine, and for some time the repetitive visuals work well to show just how stuck she feels, but I believe this was a chance to explore “Jacqueline’s” story in greater detail.
