It proved to be an entertaining pirate yarn set on the ocean, featuring Paul Henreid as "Van Horn," a Dutch sea captain whose vessel crashes along the shores of Spanish America. After the local governor—easily the standout performer, Walter Slezak—sentences them to servitude, Henreid has to come up with a way to liberate everyone and get payback. The story jumps ahead five years, and now Henreid is a notorious pirate who happens to seize Maureen O’Hara, playing a spirited woman destined to become the governor's new wife, which sets the stage for retribution. It delivers the expected combination of vibrant visuals, elaborate outfits, and sword fights, along with a familiar romantic subplot—and a touch of jealousy thanks to Binnie Barnes in the role of the celebrated Anne Bonny. I struggled to fully accept Henreid in his part; every time he spoke, I anticipated hearing "Mr. Chipping..." with that mild Austrian accent. Nevertheless, I did find it enjoyable. The film is visually appealing, and while not the finest example of its kind, it offers a pleasant diversion.
