Following an injury on the ski slopes, affluent Peter finds himself under the care of doctor Helen (Barbara Stanwyck), who suggests his ailment might be remedied with a bit of intimacy. Despite other medical professionals offering various treatments, he prefers to remain with her. She’s focused on tending to her patients, but he proves quite adept at diverting her attention, leading to a rapid romance. While she feels out of place in his grand home and intimidated by his meticulous butler (Melville Cooper), she's even less ready for the doubts that arise from her new husband. He seems to think she’s plotting something whenever she examines a patient, and these issues intensify as they discover shared acquaintances. After an unfortunate incident, she expresses frustration and insists he find some meaning in his life, or their marriage will fail. Having never held a job, he's unsure how to do so, but decides to leave home until he can surprise her—well, actually several surprises—and hopefully salvage things. The film begins promisingly, with Stanwyck and Fonda displaying good chemistry and delivering a script filled with energetic moments and near-slapstick comedy, while Cooper maintains his composure throughout the disorder. However, it falters in the final section as the momentum slows and the narrative loses its direction. There wasn't much real danger to be found, but their playful exchanges were initially quite enjoyable, demonstrating both actors’ comedic talents; it’s worth watching for roughly the first hour before the story becomes overly sentimental. Nevertheless, it’s a commendable collaborative effort that elicits some amusement.
