The film announces itself as worthwhile from its very first music thanks to Elmer Bernstein’s excellent score, and when you factor in a cast including Steve McQueen, Charles Bronson, James Coburn, Yul Brynner, and Eli Wallach—who is fantastic—there's little doubt it will be enjoyable. This adaptation of Kurosawa’s 1954 film involves a group of mistreated people who decide to hire some gunslingers to protect them from a violent gang. The visuals are quite impressive; everyone delivers a strong performance, notably Robert Vaughn as the anxious and fearful "Lee" and Horst Buchholz in the role of “Chico.” It’s a thrilling Western with plenty of surprises along the way, featuring sharp writing and direction. Wallach is particularly amusing, though he doesn't come across as very threatening playing "Calvera." The local actors are also good, and while it isn’t as intense or rough as "Seven Samurai," I believe it stands up well as a classic form of entertainment.
