Louisa Moore - Screen Zealots on Cherry

7/10 · Apr 23, 2023

Films about women's experiences don't always land effectively, but Sophie Galibert’s “Cherry” seems to capture something real about being a young woman today. The film examines how unexpectedly becoming pregnant can change someone’s life, even when their future feels uncertain. Cherry, played by Alex Trewhitt in an impressive debut performance, is 25 years old, without a stable job or clear direction, when she finds out she's ten weeks pregnant. Following a hurried visit to a clinic, Cherry learns that she has only a day to decide what to do about the unplanned pregnancy. Searching for guidance, she travels around Los Angeles talking to her closest friends, sister, grandma, dad, mom, and boyfriend Nick (Dan Schultz). The film offers an honest depiction of the challenges many women face, and Galibert proves herself to be a skilled storyteller. As Cherry is compelled to grow up quickly and deal with a difficult situation, the movie makes her experiences feel familiar to everyone. It's about making decisions, personal development, and the individual path that one woman must choose. The film offers comfort by acknowledging it’s alright to struggle, to feel lost, or to stray from your plans. Above all, it emphasizes the importance of being true to yourself. Although the subject matter might seem familiar compared to other films dealing with similar themes, “Cherry” distinguishes itself. Rather than taking a political stance, Galibert focuses on the personal aspects of a woman’s right to choose. The gravity of an unplanned pregnancy, particularly for a young woman who isn't prepared for motherhood, is presented with honesty and natural humor. “Cherry” is a wonderful film that highlights the significance of a woman's autonomy regarding having children and raising a family. It’s witty, humorous, emotional, and moving.
