This movie seems to pick up the story after the Brothers Grimm's fairy tale about Hansel and Gretl, showing them as adults in their late thirties. Hansel (Paul McGillion) is searching for his sister, who was taken by a witch queen when they were children. He joins forces with Lara (Sarain Boylan), a former witch, and Ehren (Emilie Ullerup), the daughter of a blacksmith seeking revenge. Shannen Doherty has an important part, and Jefferson Brown appears as a warlock. "Witchslayer Gretl" (2012) was essentially Syfy's attempt to capitalize on the popularity of "Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters," which came out eleven months later. A few other similar films were released around that time, including “Hansel & Gretel” from The Asylum and Lionsgate’s “Hansel & Gretel: Warriors of Witchcraft.” There was a trend for movies about witches at the time, with titles like "Beautiful Creatures" (2013) and later "The Last Witch Hunter" (2015), though those are the only ones I've seen before this one. McGillion seems unhappy on screen, but that could be explained by his character’s serious demeanor in a life-or-death situation. Doherty does well in a dual role, while Sarain Boylan brings energy and Emilie Ullerup is appealing to watch. It’s clear at least one of the characters won't survive, and I was surprised by who didn’t make it—the writers deserve credit for taking that risk. I appreciated the woodland settings, and there’s plenty of action in the forest, as well as scenes set in a witch’s grotto. However, from the beginning, the movie felt low-quality. It's like a lesser version combining elements of "Grimm's Snow White" (2012), Robin Hood, and “First Knight” (1995). I know the first one was an Asylum production, but it worked pretty well considering its limited budget and poor CGI; in my opinion, it’s even better than “Snow White and the Huntsman.” Fortunately, Lara's spirited personality won me over by the end, and I liked the positive connections between the main characters. The film is 1 hour and 28 minutes long, and it was likely filmed in Canada since it's a Canadian production—though I haven’t been able to confirm that information. GRADE: C/C-
