John Chard on Gunfight at Comanche Creek

7/10 · Apr 26, 2017

Gunfight at Comanche Creek comes from director Frank McDonald and screenwriter Edward Bernds. The movie features Audie Murphy, Ben Cooper, Colleen Miller, DeForest Kelley, and Jan Merlin. It’s a Panavision production in De Luxe Color, with cinematography by Joseph Biroc and music composed by Marlin Skiles. Murphy portrays an agent for the National Detective Agency who goes undercover to locate an outlaw group that's been freeing prisoners so they can commit further crimes. The criminals then murder these freed convicts to collect on the bounties placed on their heads. Apparently a remake of the 1957 film The Last of the Badmen, Gunfight at Comanche Creek combines detective elements with familiar Western themes in an engaging and suspenseful way. It’s notable to see Murphy as Bob Gifford (also known as Judd Tanner), a confident man who has to rely on his intelligence rather than weapons to get through the undercover assignment. While it isn't a fast-paced action film—the tension doesn’t really build until the ending—the plot is clever enough to hold your interest. What are its drawbacks? An uncredited Reed Hadley provides narration that feels disruptive. Rather than allowing viewers to become completely immersed in the story, the filmmakers felt compelled to explain everything happening at every stage of the plot! They seemed to be aiming for a hard-boiled detective feel, but it doesn't quite fit. Colleen Miller is given one of those standard female roles, but the rest of the supporting actors do their jobs well. Murphy gives a solid performance that his fans will appreciate, and Biroc’s color photography is visually appealing. It earns a 7/10.
