It feels like only a short while ago that Franchot Tone was on board the HMS “Bounty,” and now here he is once more, on another ship, encountering mutiny again, this time during a trading expedition to Oregon. The vessel is under the command of Captain "Thorne" (Walter Brennan), who’s particular but not cruel, and its crew includes a typical assortment of sailors alongside the confident Frenchman “de Montigny” (John Carroll). They haven't even cleared port when "Stevens" (Tone) finds someone hiding in his cabin. “Julie” (Carol Bruce) had been secretly brought aboard by her French admirer with the story that they were headed to France. Before he can figure out what’s going on, the captain arrives needing charts and, annoyed by the deception, demands she pretend to be his cabin boy. The remainder of the journey sees her involvement spark arguments among everyone as the ship’s two Scottish traders (Nigel Bruce and Leo G. Carroll) try to charm the locals with small items and even live piglets. After they establish their trading post, any excitement in the story mostly vanishes. It essentially turns into a rather dull love triangle that seems to make Brennan uneasy, while Nigel and Leo G. appear somewhat confused, and Tone and the other Carroll simply go through the motions as they pursue the final Carol in this narrative, who is doing her best “Esmeralda” imitation. The writing isn't particularly memorable, but the music relating to the sea occasionally perks things up during moments like raising sails and adjusting rigging, and it’s an easy enough way to pass the time until a conclusion that I suspect Brennan would have preferred to wrap up about thirty minutes sooner.
