Thinking back to a memorable episode of "Only Fools and Horses," where Del and Rodney stumble upon a valuable watch, this documentary shares a similar premise. It follows house clearance professionals tasked with cleaning out the ranch belonging to an apparently ordinary American couple who have recently passed away. While examining the bedroom, they find a painting that sparks their suspicion—and prompts them to contact specialists. These experts determine it’s a Willem de Kooning piece stolen from a museum in Arizona years ago. As the clearance team investigates further, they uncover a surprising array of items seemingly acquired through questionable means, revealing how this couple traveled the globe amassing their collection. Their photos depict what appears to be an average American pair, but they were remarkably skilled at obtaining possessions—ranging from artwork to carpets—from various owners. Featuring insights from friends, neighbors, the FBI, and the bewildered clearance crew, it's a genuinely diverting exploration of their brazen actions and how they managed to operate so successfully “under the radar.” I wasn’t particularly fond of the painting itself; however, now valued at over one hundred million dollars, the museum must be pleased to have recovered it—even after three decades.
