It seemed like a promotional piece designed to enlist people, yet I found myself questioning whether some of the realistically portrayed situations might have scared American men away. The film employs “Bill,” played by Elisha Cook Jr., to show how someone could leave their loved ones behind and find themselves in a combat area. We witness artillery fire and aerial attacks alongside intense close-quarters action, which powerfully demonstrates why those soldiers needed bayonets attached to their M1 Garands—because survival depended on aggressive force. The film combines newly filmed scenes with archival footage, suffers from excessive musical scoring, and the dialogue isn’t particularly strong, but the story does provide a somewhat more genuine depiction of not only the dangers of war but also the worries experienced by those involved in fighting it.
