It's a remarkably unsettling crime story, primarily focused on "Emmie" (played by Siobhan McKenna). She comes to the farm belonging to the Tallent family from Ireland and quickly develops a reputation as someone flirtatious, easily winning over the men but not so much the women—particularly the wary "Bess" (Anne Crawford). Around this time, the roguish boxer "Dan" (Maxwell Reed) enters the picture. He seems to have some knowledge about "Emmie," and when he's discovered lifeless in a ditch, suspicion immediately falls on her. But did she commit the act? What is it that she’s hiding? Lance Comfort directs with tension throughout, and there are noteworthy performances from McKenna and Crawford which help illustrate the roles of women within society alongside the perspectives of the men around them. The film utilizes light and shadow effectively to build up a feeling of threat that steadily grows as the narrative moves toward its fairly thrilling conclusion. This isn't like many films in this category; it succeeds just as much through what’s left unsaid, with gaps—like portions missing from a puzzle—that contribute positively to the overall mystery. Maxwell Reed doesn't offer a great deal, but Liam Redmond and Barry Morse provide solid support within a cast that feels familiar, resulting in an unexpectedly enjoyable experience.
