Some moments involving Reggie (played by Richard Basehart) and Evelyn (Mary Murphy) stand out as genuinely well-done within this mystery drama. Evelyn has become obsessed with Reggie, creating significant problems for his marriage to Lesley (Faith Brook), despite his insistence that he’s never encountered her. The situation escalates when the couple goes to Newcastle to face Evelyn, and she reveals a signed photograph of him... but what's behind it all? After setting things up in a captivating way, the story loses momentum rather abruptly. Constance Cummings, as the infatuated actress Kay, and his employer "Ben" (Roger Livesey, who feels like he isn’t given enough to do) become involved in a narrative that descends into a convoluted and awkward situation; it fails to maintain the initial psychological tension and becomes quite clumsy. Basehart delivers an adequate performance – about all you could expect from him really – and Roger Livesey's voice always had a certain impact on screen, but beyond those aspects, the film is largely memorable for its first, compelling, twenty minutes.
