“Jim,” portrayed by Ciarán Hinds, travels from San Francisco to Northern Ireland along with his daughter, “Patricia” (Kerry Condon), intending to visit his childhood home. There, “Paddy” (Conleth Hill) is managing to survive on a combination of government assistance and money earned through some questionable shellfish harvesting with friends near the coast. As they observe their surroundings, “Jim” recounts to “Patricia” the origins of his relationship with “Paddy,” detailing how girlfriend problems coincided with the outbreak of the Troubles, bringing things to an abrupt halt. A quarter of a century has elapsed since then, and the central question becomes whether reconciliation is possible or if it’s simply too late. The film feels slightly extended, but it gains momentum later on when “Paddy,” mistaking someone for the unemployment inspector, leads to a comedic scene on the beach reminiscent of "Blazing Saddles." Set against a backdrop of national tragedy, this proves to be a moving story about the possibility and strength of forgiveness, presented in a characteristically Irish style that avoids simplicity and incorporates moments of humor.
