Jean Kent delivers an outstanding performance as Gwen in this swiftly paced drama. Following a difficult upbringing involving time in borstal and losing her job at a jewelry store, she finds herself having consumed too much alcohol one night, driving home, and unintentionally hitting a police officer. Hoping to evade legal consequences, she joins forces with a U.S. soldier who has deserted, "Mallone" (Bonar Colleano), and they soon become a source of minor theft for many people. The narrative unfolds through flashbacks presented to another young woman, “Lyla” (Diana Dors), seemingly intended to deter her from similar choices. It appears that each stage of Gwen’s life exposed her to negative influences, with the magistrate "Miss Thorpe" (Flora Robson) representing a particularly unsympathetic figure. Herbert Lom portrays a morally questionable nightclub owner, and Peter Glenville plays an unreliable housemate “Rosso,” both contributing significantly to shaping Gwen's character. Only "Red" (Dennis Price) seems to have had a positive impact on her life. The story is undeniably dark, which occasionally makes it feel somewhat overwhelming; however, the performances of Kent and Robson make it worthwhile viewing.
