Mary Pickford feels like a natural fit in her role as the mistreated sister, forced into servitude by her stepmother (Isabel Vernon) and stepsisters. Director James Kirkwood and those responsible for the costumes have succeeded in depicting Lucille Carney, Georgia Wilson, and their mother as unpleasant characters, while still allowing Pickford to maintain her innocent demeanor. The narrative sticks closely to the Perrault tale, though it’s considerably shorter, centering on a ball thrown by the King in an attempt to find a suitable match for his son (Owen Moore). As expected, a kitchen maid isn't invited, but thankfully, the appearance of her fairy godmother (Inez Ranous) makes it possible for her to attend and impress royalty. The pacing can feel slow at times, though the special effects are quite lovely, and there’s an undeniable connection between the two leads who have been brought together by circumstance. There are moments of humor throughout, along with a satisfying comeuppance for the unpleasant characters at the end. It really demonstrates what's possible when you start with a good story and actors who understand how to perform effectively.
