This adaptation, framed by a narrative told looking back from the future, proves to be a disappointing take on Alexandre Dumas’ thrilling “Three Musketeers.” Jonathan Hansler, credited at the beginning of the film and setting a low bar for dramatic impact, portrays an aged d'Artagnan recounting his youthful adventures to a hopeful replacement named "Philippe" (Nathan McGowran). The familiar scenes—arriving in Paris, meeting "Porthos," "Aramis," and "Athos," and their dangerous conflict with Cardinal Richelieu’s guards—are true to the novel's plot, but it feels overly talkative. The fight sequences seem like they were planned by students, and I must say that Matt Ingram-Jones, despite his looks, is outshone even by Logan Lerman. It’s evident that a small budget was used, and the actors do their best; however, it has all the hallmarks of a school play project. The story lends itself to fresh interpretations, but this version isn't one anyone—perhaps even those who acted in it—will want to share with future generations. It’s destined for video-on-demand, as was once common.
