Joseph Cotton portrays “David,” an affluent engineer who finds himself in postwar Italy and meets concert pianist “Manina” (Joan Fontaine). They have some free time before their flight back to the United States and decide to explore, ultimately missing their scheduled departure. A stroke of luck—the plane crashes—gives them a chance to pretend they’ve died, which allows their developing relationship to progress. Things appear to be unfolding nicely until his wife, “Catherine” (Jessica Tandy), and young son, "David Jr." (Robert Arthur), decide to travel to Italy and contact her friend, "Maria" (Françoise Rosay). Fontaine delivers a solid performance; she consistently possessed an inherent elegance that’s well-matched to this character. There's a noticeable connection between her and Cotton—he isn’t always convincing in romantic roles—and the beautiful Capri landscapes (though perhaps black and white photography doesn’t fully capture the beauty of the "Blue Grotto") contribute to a fairly captivating drama, complete with a memorable score by Victor Young and Kurt Weill's "September Song," which lends a sense of sophistication to what is, in reality, a rather frivolous and self-centered love story.
