Oscar Homolka gives an outstanding performance in this clever little crime noir. He plays an antiques dealer with a good reputation whose daughter, Margaret (Muriel Pavlow), is an exceptionally talented violinist. However, he also runs a second business selling stolen jewelry alongside his friend Derek Farr. The situation becomes complicated when his unpleasant associate, Morris (Manning Whiley), overhears one of their discussions and attempts to use the information for his own gain by threatening to reveal her father’s secret dealings to the young woman. His demand that he be permitted to marry her—well, it's fairly predictable from there! George King directs at a brisk tempo, and Whiley is particularly effective as the scheming subordinate whose downfall seems inevitable. The musical score, notably the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto toward the end, greatly enhances the overall mood of this excellent thriller that has much to offer. It doesn’t appear very often anymore, but if you happen to find it, it's worth seeing for the substantial role given to the star.
