The plot felt overly manufactured for my taste. "Millie" (played by Ana Scotney) is preparing to depart from Wellington for a fresh start in New York when she experiences a sudden panic attack on the plane. Overcome with fear and struggling to breathe, she disembarks but, instead of confiding in her family and friends about what happened, she decides to fabricate a story that she’s already there. She then begins posting online updates and photos while essentially staying put in her local area, completely broke. Her situation quickly deteriorates; she resorts to minor theft and ends up living in a tent before being recognized, which causes her web of lies to escalate into something increasingly absurd. Scotney's performance is decent, but the narrative doesn’t really go anywhere significant. Following that initial sense of novelty, it feels like a collection of scenarios concocted by screenwriters—like they assembled and created situations ripped directly from a “Tom and Jerry” cartoon, except these aren't particularly amusing. I did find it noteworthy how much the characters focus on presenting their lives online. Most of her problems stem from Millie’s inability to resist lying and continually compounding the situation with false clues. Honestly, who should care? She comes across as rather self-centered and unengaging from the beginning, and any efforts to explore her anxieties are completely overshadowed by a predictable and unremarkable presentation. Perhaps it could be more entertaining viewed in a cinema setting with a crowd ready for laughs, but otherwise, I found it quite disappointing.
