Ralph Michael portrays "P," an RAF flyer who finds himself reassigned to a naval rescue unit operating in the Channel, much to his displeasure. Their mission involves retrieving downed pilots, and while he resists at first, his commanding officer, “Murray,” played by David Farrar, understands his frustration and anticipates that he’ll eventually recognize the importance of their work. The team navigates the water in fast motorboats, constantly dodging enemy aircraft and mines—a hazard created by both sides—and a palpable sense of danger develops for roughly an hour. It steers clear of overt propaganda but possesses a characteristic 1944 optimism enhanced by stock footage and a portrayal of British resolve. John Slater contributes positively to the ensemble cast of recognizable British actors, and despite its predictability and unremarkable acting/writing, the film highlights the dangers faced when recovering airmen from the water (and reveals how fragile some of their equipment was) as the war drew to a close.
