Valerie Hobson portrays Diana, a woman who loses her husband, a Member of Parliament, during World War II. Following a prolonged grieving period that doesn’t seem to lessen, her nanny, Flora Robson, initiates events leading to her former charge being chosen to take over her late husband's parliamentary seat. Though initially apprehensive, she adapts well and finds love again—a fortunate occurrence brought about by an air raid, with James McKenchnie playing "Richard." However, a surprising revelation then occurs, prompting her to revisit her life four years prior and confront unexpected challenges. Hobson’s performance is commendable, as is Robson's, who provides several affecting lines and even delivers a brief speech near the film’s conclusion regarding the duties and prospects for those tasked with rebuilding after wartime victory. Michael Redgrave appears as "Col. Wentworth," a man burdened by a mission demanding considerable personal sacrifices on behalf of the nation. Diana evolves her position into one characterized by resolve and compassion, advocating for numerous women left behind—widows whose children have been moved away, struggling to manage financially amidst the devastation of war. The film possesses an undeniable sense of authenticity; as their postman often laments, "things will never be the same again"—and he may very well be correct.
