Susan Hayward gives a commendable performance as a woman who reaches her limit with her marriage and chooses to go back to her mother's home in Nashville, which seems quite well-protected. Fortunately, Andrew Jackson, portrayed by Charlton Heston, happens to be nearby to ensure she isn’t stopped. Their trip is not easy, though, as they attempt to evade both her husband and some hostile Native Americans, and during this time, feelings develop between them. He has plans to improve conditions for the settlers, so he organizes a militia to confront the natives, and given his background as a lawyer, the pair quickly become important figures, setting him on track for a career in the Senate. When they learn that her husband filed for divorce citing her infidelity, they get married—though this is only one of many hardships this couple encounters as he gets closer to a position in the White House, which has recently been destroyed by fire. The film takes an odd turn, seeming to center on “Miss Rachel” until the very end when it becomes clear that his political ambitions have been steadily progressing, even though her reputation had previously caused problems for him socially. Heston is adequate, although he doesn’t entirely fit the role; Hayward, however, delivers a spirited and thoughtful performance, and the story effectively shows the challenges faced by these early settlers—the subordinate status of women at that time, and a pervasive sense of hypocrisy that he hopes to eliminate. It seems like one person's disgrace can be another's chance for advancement.
