Alfred Hitchcock once said filmmakers should only use spoken words when it’s impossible to tell the story through visuals, and he often criticized movies that rely too much on dialogue. No matter how you approach director Potsy Ponciroli's **MOTOR CITY**, one thing is immediately apparent: this is a film that prioritizes visual storytelling and disregards many conventions of typical action films. With almost no spoken lines -- Ben MacKenzie’s character doesn’t say anything at all -- and an excellent soundtrack from the 1970s, Ponciroli takes up Hitchcock's challenge and delivers a fun revenge action movie featuring one of Hollywood’s most talented groups of actors. Alan Ritchson is fantastic as John Miller, dominating every scene with his large, intense presence, bringing depth to each action-packed moment from start to finish. His character's romantic partner -- Sophia (played by Shailene Woodley) -- shares a convincing connection with Ritchson on screen. Their peaceful, working-class life is suddenly shattered by a plot that rivals the complexity of Alexander Dumas’s ***The Count of Monte Cristo***. Through revealing flashbacks and a look at police corruption reminiscent of **SERPICO**, what follows will satisfy any action fan as Ponciroli's film relentlessly pursues revenge with brutal intensity. Also featuring Ben Foster, Pablo Schreiber, and Lionel Boyce, plus a brief appearance by Detroit native Jack White (who is one of 28 executive producers), **MOTOR CITY** demonstrates what many action films are afraid to try: dialogue isn’t necessary when a filmmaker knows how to tell a story visually. **MOTOR CITY** will likely polarize critics -- and may struggle at the box office due to its release date (sandwiched between **THE ODYSSEY** and **SPIDER-MAN: BRAND NEW DAY**) -- but hopefully it will gain popularity through word of mouth and do well when it becomes available for streaming. Taking a "less is more" approach to this revenge actioner, much like what made George Miller's **MAD MAX: FURY ROAD** and Jalmari Helander’s beloved Finnish **SISU** films so successful, **MOTOR CITY** provides audiences with an engaging visual experience without excessive explanation. The main actors give noteworthy performances -- particularly in a memorable, completely silent seduction scene between Woodley and Foster at a late-night coffee shop meeting. This is arguably Woodley’s finest work. Similarly impressive, Ritchson proves himself to be one of the most captivating performers working in Hollywood today.
