Dr. Stevens, portrayed by Roger Moore, delivers a solid performance in this murder mystery, playing a respected psychiatrist who unexpectedly becomes entangled in a police inquiry concerning the deaths of his assistant and a patient. He’s compelled to clear his name with Police Lieutenant McGreavy, played by Rod Steiger, and his partner Angeli, portrayed by Elliott Gould, which requires him to figure out what's happening. The question arises: is he being targeted? And if so, why, and by whom? While the cast performs well, the script feels somewhat uninspired, making it relatively simple to identify the person manipulating events—or at least, who’s assisting them—before too long, which diminishes the suspense considerably. The explanation behind the story's central motivation turns out to be rather artificial, reminiscent of Agatha Christie novels, as an excessive number of new characters are introduced towards the conclusion, preventing viewers from attempting to solve the puzzle themselves. It’s enjoyable watching these experienced actors share a screen, and that does elevate the overall quality—though ultimately, it comes across as a fairly superficial gangster film unlikely to leave a lasting impression.
