Wuchak on Beyond Atlantis

5/10 · Dec 4, 2021

Several Americans discover tales of valuable pearls on a far-flung island in the East Indies and band together to retrieve them, encountering an isolated tribe living there. John Ashley, Sid Haig, and Patrick Wayne portray the self-serving members of this group, alongside Lenore Stevens as a scientist. Leigh Christian appears as an attractive blonde who is part of the island’s community. “Beyond Atlantis” (1973) mixes elements of “City Beneath the Sea” (1953) with the scantily clad women found in Hammer's “When Dinosaurs Ruled the Earth” (1970). It shares a similar low-budget feel as the latter, but proves more enjoyable because of the impressive location filming and the cast’s talent. The director demonstrates an ability to film women respectfully—a notable aspect of the picture. The movie had potential to reach the level of “City Beneath the Sea” or "Mysterious Island" (1961), but a stronger script would have been needed. That requires investment, and unfortunately, the producers lacked those resources. Although this is not a great film, it’s diverting enough for viewers to consider watching. The movie's length is 1 hour, 31 minutes, and filming took place in the Philippines. GRADE: C/C-
