The exchanges between “Nasa” (Clara Bow) and “Sunny” (Thelma Todd) are what truly animate the film, as they both possess a remarkable talent for bickering. Nasa comes from Texas with a rather turbulent history, is skilled at fighting, and isn’t shy about using her charm. Unfortunately, her choices lead her to marry "Larry" (Monroe Owsley). Her father believes she's made a grave error, which turns out to be justified when it becomes clear he married her because “Sunny” had previously rejected him. Life is agreeable while Nasa has money, but later, with a child in the picture, she finds herself facing difficulties once more and must depend on "Moonglow" (Gilbert Roland), a longtime friend who also carries his own share of complicated experiences, though he’s generally a kinder person. Bow delivers a strong performance throughout this fast-paced melodrama; its constant shifts keep it engaging as her self-destructive tendencies seem limitless. She never fit the mold of those stereotypical innocent silent film stars, and here, with dialogue to deliver and a well-defined role, she brings something fresh to the screen. Although her appearances are not frequent. Todd also gives a noteworthy performance, perhaps more restrained than Bow’s, and the supporting cast provides a window into how unreliable relationships could be, irrespective of marital status or family ties. This pre-code drama doesn't hold back much, and it offers an enjoyable chance for women to take center stage.
