Race for the Yankee Zephyr provides passable entertainment, but its inconsistent quality makes it hard to become invested. Donald Pleasence’s portrayal of Barney feels eccentric; he seemed to be enjoying himself, yet as an audience member, his performance contributes to the film's overall sense of disorder, which is pretty scattered. Ken Wahl and Lesley Ann Warren both deliver solid performances, although George Peppard’s villain isn’t particularly memorable; Peppard is adequate in the role. The story progresses at a slow pace, offering little for the viewer to connect with. It’s undeniably stretched out, and truthfully, it could have been told as a short film! Certainly, there are less enjoyable movies available, but this 1981 production is ultimately one you're likely to forget.
