The affluent “Carl” (Denver Pyle) finds himself distanced from his musician son, “Carroll” (Keith Carradine), a contemplative womanizer who avoids commitment with the women he encounters while living in Los Angeles. It's hard to understand what these women find appealing about him, but he seems to hold their attention, and that’s apparently the justification Alan Rudolph uses to show us a glimpse into his characters’ messy lives—and it’s pretty ridiculous. The film is filled with elaborate musical numbers featuring an orchestra on screen, as we observe a series of unremarkable misdeeds made even more baffling by the presence of actors like Harvey Keitel – his father's assistant; Geraldine Chaplin, Lauren Hutton and Sissy Spacek. Of these familiar faces, Spacek makes something of an impression, but she’s not around enough to give this wandering exploration of family conflict and self-absorption any real direction. Casual relationships can work well in a film if it’s intended as humor or explores the story and characters with some depth, however, here it feels like we're watching clumsy performances meant to push us away instead of draw us in. I honestly couldn’t have told you what would happen to them, and I didn’t really care.
